Lauren Alaina may not have won American Idol, but her career is still skyrocketing. Her debut single, “Like My Mother Does,” was sent to radio after she performed it on the show May 24 and it debuted at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It was also No. 11 on the Digital Songs chart and No. 20 on the Hot 100 chart after selling more than 121,000 units in one week. Lauren is the highest debut for a second-place Idol finalist in six years.
“This is so awesome!” Lauren said. “American Idol has changed my life, so I’m excited that the songs I performed on there are doing so well. I can’t believe that I have a song out on country radio, much less that so many stations started playing it right away. I can’t wait to get out and meet everybody and thank them personally for playing my song.”
“Not only is ‘Like My Mother Does’ important to me professionally,” adds Lauren, “but it’s also special to me personally because my mom has been beside me through this whole thing. She has been my biggest cheerleader and my biggest supporter when I was feeling down. This song is for her.”
Lauren was able to perform with one of her personal idols and former American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, during the show’s finale. Lauren gushed about her encounter with Carrie, confirming that the superstar was everything she had thought she would be, reports Nashville.com.
“I’m a huge country music fan and there are so any girls that I look up to, especially Carrie Underwood, everyone knows that, I’ve shouted that one out loud for a while now,” Lauren said. “And I met her and talking with her, I could tell that she genuinely cared that I was there. She actually invited me back after the party for all the contestants after the show. She invited me back to her area and let me sit with her and talk with her and it was amazing to see that someone I had looked up to for so long was actually the person I thought they were.”
Carrie gave Lauren and fellow finalist Scotty McCreery her phone number, but also slipped Lauren a little something extra. “She got me this necklace from Tiffany’s that says my name on it and then ‘Love C.U.’ on the back,” Lauren said. “I want to get her some dog clothes [in return].”
Lauren will start recording her debut album this week and make her first appearances at CMA Music Festival and the Grand Ole Opry.
